Cake and meal

About this section

Cake and meal make up the protein side of a ration: cottonseed, sunflower, soya, linseed, rapeseed and safflower. A seller gives the raw material and the protein share, along with sack weight and how large the batch is. Filters split one raw material from another, and the protein scale separates a strong product from a weak one. Storage mistakes cost the most here, because leftover oil turns the goods rancid and damp brings mould, so ask when it was pressed and how it lay in the store before agreeing anything.

What is the difference between cake and meal?

Cake is what remains after oil is pressed out and still holds 6 to 10 percent fat. Meal comes from solvent extraction with 1 to 3 percent fat but more protein. Cake carries more energy, meal is cheaper per unit of protein.

How much cottonseed cake is safe?

Cottonseed cake contains gossypol, so it goes to adult ruminants in a limited amount and never to milk fed lambs, poultry or pigs. The amount is raised step by step rather than all at once.

How should cake be stored?

Dry, under a roof, on pallets and away from water. Mouldy or rancid material must not be fed, because the poisoning costs far more than the sack that was saved.

Does cake replace alfalfa hay?

No. Cake is concentrated protein and hay is the fibre source without which the rumen stops working. They complement each other, and cake fills the protein gap when roughage is only average.
