About this section
Herd specialists and consultants: ration and feeding calculations, pairing and selection work, setting up recording, farm audits, staff training. This is not medicine, and a sick animal belongs with a veterinarian. The specialist tackles a different set of questions: why the herd is not putting on weight, where the feed disappears, which females are not paying their keep. The format is given on the card, either a visit to you or a review of figures you send in. Gather your stock numbers by group, the ration, the weight gains, the losses and the lambing results in advance, or the talk turns into general advice.
How does this differ from veterinary work?
A vet treats the individual animal, while the specialist works on the herd: feeding, breeding, selection and records. Deaths from disease go to the vet, steady poor gains and weak conception belong here.
What does a ration calculation give me?
Clarity about what you are paying for. Feed is often bought in quantity while protein or minerals fall short, and every kilo of gain then costs more than it should. Rations are worked out by group and by liveweight, not by eye.
Does a small holding need records?
Even at fifty head, without written records you cannot see which females raise twins and which have stayed empty for a third year. Setting up recording, on paper or in software, is taken on as a separate job.
Can the review be done remotely?
Yes, some providers work from figures and photographs you send in. Check the format line on the card, which reads either a visit to you or work at their own base.
