Shearing, milking, scales

About this section

Shearing machines, milking units, livestock scales, cream separators and butter churns, incubators, feed mixers and dispensers, hoof trimming crushes, milk coolers. Beyond its purpose, every card states the power source - hand, 220 or 380 volt mains, battery, petrol - and that is no small detail: a remote grazing camp has no socket, and part of this kit simply will not run there. A third column says which animals it was made for. Anything that cuts or milks is bought together with its consumables: spare blades for the clipper, liners for the milking unit.

Why weigh when the eye can judge it?

The eye is out by tens of kilograms, while dosing, ration and daily gain are all worked back from a real weight. Without weighing there is no way to say whether a finishing period paid for itself.

How do I pick a shearing machine?

By head count. A household model heats up and fades after a dozen animals, while a farm grade machine is built for a whole flock. Spare blades and sharpening count for more than the wattage on the box.

What does a milking unit need?

Steady power and somewhere to wash it, because milk film left inside the hoses breeds bacteria. Look at churn capacity, the pulsator type, and whether replacement liners can be sourced later.

Who actually needs an incubator?

Anyone hatching poultry at home. Choose by the number of eggs per setting and by the automation: turning and an accurate thermostat decide the hatch rate far more than raw capacity does.
