About this section

Compact tractors, two wheel tractors and cultivators, mowers, balers, tedders and rakes, grain crushers and feed mills, feed pelletisers, pumps, generators. The seller states power in horsepower, the year of build and the condition; power and year appear as sliders in the filter, so anything too weak or too old drops out in one move. Match power to the load: an oversized machine stands idle, an undersized one runs flat out and burns through its life in a season. On a machine that has already worked, ask for the hours, what has been replaced and whether the paperwork is still there.

How much horsepower do I need?

It follows the load: the heavier the implement and the tighter the soil, the more power is wanted. A two wheel tractor pulls a plot and a cart, a compact tractor pulls a mower and a trailer. Anything run flat out for ever does not last.

What does a grain crusher give?

Home grown grain crushed on the spot works out cheaper than bought compound feed, and cattle, horses and poultry digest crushed grain better than whole. Look at output per hour and the set of screens, whose holes set the grind.

Round baler or square baler?

A round baler makes bales of several hundred kilograms that have to be loaded by machine. A square baler ties small rectangular bales a person can carry. The choice comes down to whether you have a loader.

New machine or one that has worked?

One that has worked costs less, but the life of the engine and of the cutting gear is partly spent already. Ask for it to be started in front of you and run without load: knocking and vibration are heard at once.
