About this section
Keep and finishing for stock that belongs to someone else: space, feed and daily care for an agreed term. The card shows the species accepted, the number of places, the minimum term in days and whether feed is included in the rate. That last point decides everything, since a rate with feed and a rate without are two figures nobody can compare. Ask about the ration, about weighing on arrival and on collection, about what happens in case of illness or death and who pays the veterinary bill. Settle all of it before the animals leave your yard, because after unloading it is too late to negotiate.
How does finishing differ from keep?
Finishing aims at weight gain and is measured on scales, with animals weighed on arrival and again on collection. Keep is simply housing for a period when you have nowhere to hold the stock yourself.
How is the rate worked out?
Most often per head per day, with feed treated as a separate question. Finishing is sometimes charged by the kilo of gain, and then weighing at both ends becomes compulsory.
What should be recorded at handover?
Head count, tag numbers, liveweight from the scales, health condition, ration and term. Photographs and a written weight are what settle a dispute later on.
Who answers for losses?
That is agreed with the provider in advance, since the site is not part of the deal and covers no losses. Ask what he does when an animal falls ill and how he notifies the owner.
