About this section

Hides and pelts: sheepskin, karakul, goat, cattle, horse and camel. Preservation is the line that matters most here. A fresh hide comes off today and goes straight to work, salted and dried hides wait for a load to the tannery, and a tanned one is ready for the cutting table. Area is given in square decimetres and the bargaining follows it. Buyers are leather workshops, furriers and coat makers; small lots follow a slaughter, large ones come from abattoirs.

How does karakul differ from ordinary sheepskin?

Karakul is the pelt of a karakul lamb, valued for the pattern of its curl and taken in the first days of life. Sheepskin comes from a grown animal and is judged by the pelt side, the density and the length of the fleece.

How is a hide preserved after slaughter?

Usually with salt, spread flesh side up and covered generously. Dried hides are dried in shade rather than sun. What happens in the first hours decides whether a tannery will accept the hide at all.

What does area in decimetres mean?

Leather is measured by area rather than weight, and a square decimetre is a ten by ten centimetre square. Area is what a workshop uses to work out yield and to set the price of a single skin.

Does the site grade the hides?

No. Grade, holes, knife cuts and mite damage are for the buyer or their own inspector to judge at viewing. The site puts no value on goods and takes no part in the payment.
