About this section

Tinned meat in jars and cans, made from lamb, goat, beef, horse, camel, poultry or rabbit. The species is a line of its own and it is where the search starts, since two tins with the same label can hold quite different things inside. Net weight in grams and shelf life in days appear on every card, along with the halal mark. Buyers take it on the road, into the mountains and into store, and some workshops offer to repeat the same lot monthly.

How do I pick good tinned meat?

Read the species, the net weight and the production date, then at handover check that the tin is neither swollen nor dented along the seam. Ask the workshop about the recipe and the sterilising, because home and factory tins keep differently.

How long does a tin keep?

The card gives the term in days from production. A factory tin lasts for years, a home-sealed jar noticeably less and it asks to be kept cool. Nothing about that term can be judged by eye.

What does the halal mark cover?

The declaration of the seller about the raw material and the production alike. The site does not verify it, so ask for the certificate and the name of the workshop before buying, above all if you resell.

Can I buy wholesale for a shop?

Yes, and cards sometimes carry the recurring supply mark left by workshops that ship the same lot each month. Volume, credit terms and a schedule are agreed directly between you.
