Hygiene and disinfection
8 listingsAbout this section
Products that keep the shed and the animal clean: disinfection of buildings and equipment, udder care, hoof baths, treatments against insects and ticks, rodent control, bedding driers, detergents. A listing gives the purpose, the form, whether liquid or concentrate, powder, granules, spray, gel or smoke bomb, and the size of the pack. Judge a concentrate by its dilution rate rather than by the price of the canister: a litre diluted a hundred times costs less than ready mixed solution. Rate, contact time and whether animals may stay inside during treatment are printed on the label, and are read before buying.
How is a shed prepared for treatment?
By cleaning it first: no product works over muck and dirt. Bedding comes out, surfaces are washed, everything is left to dry, and only then is the solution applied at the rate the maker states.
What are hoof baths for?
The flock walks through the bath so that horn is disinfected and hardened and foot rot is held back. It is prevention for the whole group; a lame animal is treated apart, with the hoof trimmed and dressed.
How is the udder looked after?
Before milking with a cleaning product and a wipe, and after milking with a preparation that seals the teat canal until it closes. It is the cheapest prevention of mastitis there is.
May animals stay inside during treatment?
That depends on the product: some work only in an empty building, with a contact time and airing afterwards, and smoke bombs all the more so. Whether animals may be present is always stated on the label.
