About this section
Wool as it comes off the shears: sheep wool, karakul, goat down, mohair and camel. A processor reads the card by two numbers, fibre diameter in microns and staple length in centimetres, then looks at the third line, which says whether the clip is greasy, washed or carded. Greasy wool weighs more and costs less per kilogram, but part of that weight leaves in the wash. Lots are counted in kilograms and a minimum shipment is often stated.
What does fibre diameter in microns mean?
The thickness of a single fibre. The lower the number, the finer and softer the wool and the higher the price. Coarse wool from fat-tailed breeds goes into felt and insulation, fine merino into yarn and cloth.
Is greasy or washed wool the better buy?
Greasy is cheaper, yet up to a third of its weight can be grease and vegetable matter, and you pay for the scouring yourself. Washed costs more per kilogram and is close to clean fibre.
How is wool stored and carried?
In a dry shed, in bales or sacks, away from direct sun and away from feed. Damp wool heats and loses colour within a week, which is why a clip is dried before it is packed.
Who buys wool on this site?
Felting and spinning workshops, yurt makers and traders buying for export. They name their own figure: the site sets no purchase price and stays out of the payment.
Where do I find shearing equipment?
Machines and hand shears are sold in the farm equipment branch. The shearing itself is booked under services, where crews quote a price per head and say how many head a day they manage.
