About this section

The Arashan is a Central Asian fat-tailed breed kept for meat and tail fat. Farms value it for steady gain on pasture and for a calm flock; the fleece is semi-coarse and never the reason to keep it. This breed is ordered more often than it is found ready on the shelf, because the stock sits in private households and reaches a public listing far less often than the common fat-tailed breeds. That is why a buyer request works better here than browsing: you describe the animal you need, giving age, weight and region, and sellers answer you themselves. Before travelling, ask for pictures of the whole animal and of it walking, since a single head shot shows neither leg placement nor condition. Price is built from weight, age and origin rather than from the breed name, and two rams of equal weight can differ twofold.

Why are Arashan listings so rare?

Most of the stock is held by private households and changes hands through acquaintances. The breed reaches the shelf less often than Gissar or Edilbay, so buyers usually post a request instead.

How do I order an animal of this breed?

Leave a buyer request stating the breed, the age, the weight and the region you need. Sellers read those requests and reply, and you agree on a viewing from there.

What should I ask before I travel?

The weight from the last weighing, the age, the treatments already done, and pictures of the whole animal in motion. Those questions cut out half of the wasted journeys.

Does the fleece bring any income?

The wool is semi-coarse and stays a by-product rather than a source of income. The breed earns from meat and tail fat, and shearing mostly serves the hygiene of the animal.
