About this section

Rabbits from breeders: Californian, New Zealand, Flemish Giant, grey giant and crosses. People take them singly, as a breeding pair, or by the cage for fattening, so age, live weight and sex are the fields to read, since two animals of one sex will give you no litter. Filtering runs on breed, age, weight and region, and once you name your own area the distance appears on each card. That matters more here than with large stock, because rabbits travel badly. Ask the breeder about vaccination before agreeing on anything.

At what age is a young rabbit bought?

Kits leave the doe at 30 to 45 days and no earlier, since their digestion is still changing over. The calmest age for a move to a new home is two to three months.

When does a rabbit reach slaughter weight?

Meat breeds and their crosses reach 2.5 to 3 kg live weight at three to four months on full feeding. After that the gain slows down while the feed bill stays where it was.

What are rabbits vaccinated against?

The core vaccinations are against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. Those two wipe out a whole shed at once, so ask whether the rabbit has had them and on what date.

What do rabbits eat?

Hay all year round and water always available are the base, with pellets or grain and a little green stuff on top. Change the feed gradually: a sudden switch usually ends in digestive trouble.
