About this section
Horses put up by their owners: working and harness animals, saddle horses, youngsters and breeding stock. Besides age and body weight, height at the withers is given in centimetres and has a scale of its own among the filters, which rules out a small horse where a tall one is wanted. The local Karabair stands beside crossbreds and imported animals, so what a horse has been trained to do matters more than the name of the breed. Ask whether it goes under saddle, pulls a cart, or has worked mountain tracks; a viewing is arranged on the spot.
How is a horse measured?
At the withers, from the ground to the highest point, with a measuring stick, on level hard footing. The height is written in centimetres and the section gives it a filter scale of its own.
How do I tell the age of a horse?
By the incisors: up to about eight or ten years they read fairly accurately, after that the margin widens and the papers plus the word of the breeder are the safer guide.
What do I look at during a viewing?
Hooves and legs, movement at walk and trot on hard ground, breathing after work, and the back under a saddle. Lameness, interference marks and a rubbed wither show within five minutes if the horse is led out.
What is the Karabair breed?
A local Uzbek riding and harness horse: not big, hardy, used to heat and to mountain roads. Owners here put it to work more often than the saddle horses brought in from abroad.
